11. Joe Lieberman

Joe Lieberman has made the list at number 11 for his methodical and calculated efforts at turning himself into America's political median. If you plotted all American politicians on a graph, Lieberman would be the wishy-washy dot bisecting all the others.

I don't know what made Joe wake up one day and say, “You know what, I think I want to be the absolute most center that I can be.” Or was he just born without the genes that give people passion and personality?

I don't understand why so many politicians feel it necessary to position themselves in the center on every issue. Here's the thing: being in the middle on every issue does not mean that you will be half right every time. What it means is that you only have the potential of being right on those occasions when people of strong convictions are wrong. And it also means that you don't care enough about anything to risk a little political capital by taking a strong stand.

Reporter in the year 1861: “Mr. Lieberman, where do you stand on the issue of slavery and the Union?”

Joe: “I think we can build a coalition and come to some consensus on these issues. A compromise can be worked out if middleness prevails.”

Reporter: “What do you propose?”

Joe: “Well for starters, I think it would be reasonable for the Southern States to keep half their slaves.”

Reporter: “And the Union?”

Joe: “A fair compromise would be to split it in half.”

And so it goes with Lieberman and the ongoing health care debate.

Being non-committal and without conviction is nothing new in politics, but why make it the cornerstone of your political career?

Go ahead Joe, eat all the vanilla. You know you want to.

Headline: The Sound and the Fury

We live in a world of headlines and sound bites, of complex stories and ideas boiled down to a few words printed in bold type.

Most don't go beyond the headlines and 20 second sound bites, and many journalists don't have any incentive to go beyond that themselves.

Needless to say, quality information can't be conveyed in this way; therefore, a vast majority of us are ignorant concerning a good number of things we assume we understand.

There are people willing to take advantage of us lazy minded simpletons, we who believe everything we read, by slopping us like pigs with whatever dumpster bound crude they can get their hands on, and watching in delight as we gorge ourselves on the latest popular propaganda.

So pull up your trough, because I have decided to make an extra effort to do my part in this headline world of ours. From time to time, I'm going to take some complex story or idea and boil it down to a few words in bold type.

The title of these 'Headline' posts will take the same form of the title of this post. And the subject will be whatever I take a notion to 'headlinanize'.

This post is rather lengthy, but subsequent 'Headline' posts will only be about as long as the following (for 'Headline: The Sound and the Fury'):

In God We Trust

We trust God so much we invented money. (Sounds like some are not as trusting as they let on.)

But we kind of know this is a contradiction, so to make ourselves feel better about it we print that we trust God on the little green notes we use to divide up worldly power. And then if we really feel guilty about our lack of faith and trust, we give 10% of the worldly power notes we have collected away to self proclaimed representatives of God.

They use this money to build big Churches where congregations can hear why God does not want people with the most little green worldly power notes to pay taxes. After all, these people are already commited to God’s self proclaimed representatives for 10%.

Occasionally at the big Churches built with the notes we use to divide worldly power, that are stamped with a proclamation of our faith in a God who we trust and believe in so much that we invented money, someone talks about the Son of God, and someone experiences a spiritual rebirth, and someone learns a little bit about sacrifice, and charity, and conviction, and someone finds peace, and someone finds help. Occasionally.

When the Son of God walked on the Earth, they divided up worldly power not with paper notes, stamped with a confession of alleged faith, but with coins stamped with the images of Emperors. Jesus wasn’t much into collecting these worldly power coins. Some might argue He didn’t need them. And no doubt that was the case, but I suspect He just didn’t much care for them. “Render unto Caesar”, and so on.

I don’t think anyone could reasonably argue that Jesus wasn’t all about some Christianity. He invented it, let’s not forget. Yet he never collected piles of worldly power coins stamped with a proclamation of faith in Caesar in order to build huge temples. Instead, He had faith in his Dad and walked around the countryside telling people the truth and teaching people how not to rely on worldly power coins. “Lilies of the field”, and so on.

Well I came all this way to get here so let me finish it: the most glaring sign that unequivocally demonstrates Man’s lack of faith in God is that we felt it necessary to print “In God we Trust” on our worldly power notes.

You want to really trust God? I happen to be one of God’s representatives. Feel free to unburden yourself as much as your faith in God will allow. I accept Master Card, check, and paypal.

I see socialists

Except for being a hardcore capitalist, Obama is totally a socialist.

I know this because he wants people to have health insurance and because he is telling school children to do good in school (commie bastard!).

Also, he spends way too much money.

From the Congressional Budget Office:

Budget deficits in billions
2001 -32.4
2002 -317.4
2003 -538.4
2004 -568.0
2005 -493.6
2006 -434.5
2007 -342.2
2008 -459

Which means Bush was a socialist President as well. Or is wasting money only bad when it's being wasted on things like education, health care, attempts at recovering from a Bush economic disaster, and other such?
